How to Clean Your Top Load Washing Machine: A Step-by-Step Guide

Cleaning your top load washing machine is essential to maintain its efficiency and prevent unpleasant odors. Over time, detergent residue, dirt, and grime can build up inside the machine. Follow these simple steps to keep your washing machine sparkling clean and running smoothly.

Step 1: Bleach Soak & First Cycle

The first step to cleaning your top load washing machine is to remove any buildup inside.

Instructions:

  1. Fill the washer with HOT water to the highest setting.

  2. Add 1 quart of chlorine bleach – avoid using detergent.

  3. Let the machine agitate for one minute, then let it sit for one hour to allow the bleach to soak.

  4. After the hour has passed, allow the washer to run through its longest wash and spin cycle.

This process will help break down any bacteria and mold buildup inside the machine.

Step 2: Vinegar Soak

Next, it's time to tackle any remaining residue with a vinegar soak.

Instructions:

  1. Fill the washer with HOT water once again.

  2. Add 1 quart of distilled white vinegar.

  3. Let the machine agitate for one minute, then let it sit for another hour to give the vinegar time to work on loosening any leftover grime.

The vinegar will help neutralize odors and dissolve any remaining residue from the bleach.

Step 3: Wipe Down Your Washer

While the vinegar is soaking, take this time to clean the other parts of your machine.

Instructions:

  1. Dip a microfiber cloth or scrubber sponge into the vinegar water.

  2. Use the damp cloth to wipe down all areas of the washer, including the nooks and crannies, knobs, lid, and exterior.

If your machine has built-in dispensers for fabric softener or bleach, don't forget to clean those too. If the dispensers have removable parts, simply take them out and clean them separately. If not, follow these steps:

  • Warm 1 cup of white vinegar in the microwave or on the stove.

  • Pour it into the dispenser and allow it to sit for a few minutes to loosen any buildup.

Step 4: Second Cycle

After the vinegar has soaked for an hour, run the longest wash and spin cycle again to rinse everything clean.

Conclusion

Your top load washing machine should now be sparkling clean and ready for its next load! Regular cleaning will help your washer maintain its efficiency, prevent odors, and keep your clothes fresh.

By following this simple washing machine cleaning routine once a month, you'll ensure your machine stays in top condition for years to come!
